Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus was published back in November and was quite enjoyable. Back when I was reviewing the original game, I felt there was a real mismatch between the two main factions, the Mechanicus and the Necrons. It seemed like a weird pairing but they seemed to make it work and really managed to weave an enjoyable story.

The Heretek DLC has patched some of the holes for me in that story. Seeing the Mechanicus have to deal with a revolt from within their ranks was entertaining. It also pushed the lore forward a bit for me personally by having Necron technology become a corruption similar to what we have seen with other factions in the universe. The question for me was always what if the Mechanicum delved too deep into the Necrons and found a better god than their current one.

Since Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus was first released there have been a couple of large patches providing re-playability and difficulty configuration options. Heretek just manages to polish all of that while providing some new story missions and mechanics. Part of me feels like Heretek always belonged as part of the game and seems right at home. It was annoying as a player to have to play through the same content to reach the new story missions though but the new items and abilities helped me clear some missions faster this time around. The new content seems to be sprinkled all throughout the story with hidden missions and other surprises that, while enjoyable, rather get lost in the mix.

The new subclass is welcome, if a bit over the top. Bringing with it are a host of regeneration and hit point related abilities and perks. If you want an HP soak tank this is your subclass. The new weapons while interesting and designed well, the ability for all other subclasses to use them kind of breaks the lore friendliness for me. Why have a new weapon that is borne of corruption but let just anyone pick it up and use it with impunity.

Maybe I am just nitpicking the game balance choices in favor of lore but at my heart, I am all about the lore. Overall, if you enjoyed Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus the first go around, with this game Heretek will probably be enjoyable if a little bland. If you hesitated on playing the first time around this DLC should not deter you. The new content blends so well that even a new player will feel like it was part of the base game all along. I am interested to see where the developers take the game from here.

I give Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus — Heretek 8.5 Omnisiahs on the Omnisiah scale. Again.

Pros:

  • More complete experience for new players to the game
  • Feels like it was meant to be part of the game all along
  • $10 price tag is a good value

Cons:

  • Not a lot for returning players to dramatically change the experience
