Game streaming service OnLive is shutting down at the end of the month but Sony has purchased some of their tech for some reason
Some of you may have heard of OnLive or maybe even used the video game streaming service over the last few years since its launch. For those not in the know OnLive was a cool litter service that allowed users to purchase and play PC games without the need for a high-end system to run the graphics at the best settings. I was lucky enough to have used some of their hardware in the past and while the controller to keyboard syncs were not always the best, the service was nice and it did what you were paying for. Sadly it wasn’t as big of a hit as the company had wanted and will be shutting the service down on April 30th. Bad news for quite a few people out there.
What is kind of good news though is that Sony is picking up some of the important parts of OnLive to most likely use when it comes to the PS4 and the PS Now services. PS Now is pretty much OnLive for PlayStation games only so it seems like it would be a great idea for Sony to try and get more tech to improve and expand on the whole product. The logic is pretty sound there and why would the company not take the advantage of OnLive’s shut down to pick up the hardware and items that will just be tossed aside after the end of the month? It wouldn’t make sense right?
While it will most likely be some of the servers and streaming equipment this could also be something more than most could be expecting. Wouldn’t it be interesting to see Sony using OnLive’s old stuff to bring some great Windows and Mac titles over to the PS4 and PS Now service? It’ slightly unlikely but could become quite the possibility depending on what Sony picks up from the ashes of OnLive. This isn’t the first time they have purchased tech like this but it could hopefully lead to more games hitting their platform even if they were never originally meant to be there. Publishing agreements aside and such though.
So while OnLive is going the way of the Dodo what do you think Sony could and may do with everything being left behind? Do you think my logic is sound or is it just a load of horse shit? Would you love to play Windows games directly on the PS4 as you could before with OnLive and just a screen? Let us know what you think down in the comments. Even if you never heard of or used OnLive before now.
