Directive 8020
New details for Directive 8020’s multiplayer are here, and we are seeing what aspects Directive 8020 will be pulling from
It looks like all that we were speculating and hoping for in Directive 8020 is coming to light when it comes to the multiplayer for the game. It has now been confirmed that Supermassive Games is bringing back the Movie Night mode in this one, keeping The Dark Pictures mode alive. Not only that, but other lessons that they have learned in other titles will be showing up, too. That is to say, Directive 8020 will also have the Turning Points mechanic added into it all. Not just for the solo play, but even for the multiplayer aspect of the game. At least when it comes to the local version of the game when it lands on May 12th for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The online part will come a little bit after all of that. For now, let us discuss what all of this means for the game.
For all of these multiplayer modes in Directive 8020, it will see us and up to a group of five players taking control of different characters in the game. We will be playing out their scenes, making their choices, and seeing who lives or dies. Then, the whole group has to deal with all of those actions and keep playing their characters based on that. All to make it to the end of the story. Although one bad choice does not need to ruin the Directive 8020, as the Turning Points mechanic that was made popular in the Frank Stone title will be in here for solo play and multiplayer. This will allow players to head back to certain points in the story to retry different scenes or a failed QTE to get a different outcome. It will also allow us to see how the branching narrative could play out after we make certain choices. A little bit of a “redo” on things, but also a way for those looking for all of the lore to be able to experience the full story as they see fit.
Directive 8020 — Don’t Play Alone (Multiplayer)
Survive Together, Don’t Play Alone
Complementing its gripping single-player experience, Directive 8020 allows up to five players to play through the story together in local couch co-op via the returning Movie Night Mode. Each player takes control of a crew member aboard the Cassiopeia, passing a single controller between each other as the story unfolds. It’s up to the player and their friends on who lives and who dies; every choice matters, every mistake can be fatal, so players must work together to survive alien infiltrators, deadly dilemmas, and catastrophic system failures! Don’t Play Alone, and trust no one – not even your friends!
Directive 8020 will also support five-player online multiplayer in a free post-launch update, mirroring the couch co-op experience and bringing it online, with more information coming soon.
Second Chances, Shared
For the first time in The Dark Pictures, Directive 8020 introduces Turning Points, a new feature that lets players revisit pivotal decisions through a visual branching story tree, giving greater control over how the story unfolds. Major choices and outcomes are mapped as the story progresses, giving players a clear view of how their decisions have shaped the narrative. If a critical moment results in a death, a fractured alliance, or a regrettable outcome, players can return to a key turning point to explore an alternative path or re-try a QTE!
In group sessions and Movie Night Mode, Turning Points adds an extra layer of social tension and excitement. If a favorite character dies, players can collectively debate over whether to accept the consequence… or rewind and attempt to save them, ensuring no two group playthroughs are ever the same! For groups who want to live and die by their choices, Survival Mode locks in every consequence, where all decisions are final.
However you choose to play, the mission begins on May 12 with single-player and offline couch co-op – with online multiplayer arriving post-launch.
Directive 8020 launches on May 12, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with single-player and up to 5-player couch co-op available at release. Online multiplayer will arrive in a free post-launch update.
Did you fear that Directive 8020 was not going to have these features, or are they too popular for the developer to not add them into their titles going forward? How many different branches will we need to go down to get the full story, and how many will be slight offshoots that do not advance much? How long will it be until we see the online aspect of the Movie Night, and will it require all parties to have a copy of the game locally to enjoy? Let us discuss all of this in the comment section further down the page here. There is still so much more to see and share for Directive 8020, so be sure to come back to the website to see it all. If not here, then follow along on all of the social channels to make sure you know when it all goes live.
