Thief
The rights to do a Thief movie have been claimed and it looks like we are on the path to actually see Thief on the silver screen
Rumors and murmured words have been flying around lately that we are going to be getting a Thief movie. That would be a film based on the video game franchise that Eidos-Montréal has crafted and not another movie about random people stealing things for fun. Well I guess a Thief movie would fall into that vein of thinking but that isn’t the goal here. It is all about bringing the moderately received reboot to the franchise to the silver screen and now we have confirmation from Square Enix that someone wants to do it. Let’s hope they do it right though.
As of today it looks like Straight Up Films as acquired the rights to do a movie based on the 2014 Thief reboot. It was a fun and interesting world to say the least and it looks like they are coming at it in a very grand way. At least grand as Square Enix properties go. That is that they got the producer of the Hitman films to help produce the Thief film. For those who didn’t enjoy those films don’t worry as it looks like the mind behind How To Train Your Dragon and The Lego Movie is also going to be there to help guide the way.
Here’s part of the official release.
“We have always been passionate about telling stories and bringing them to different mediums. With the intricate world of Thief being made into a feature film, a larger audience will be able to dive into this universe” says David Anfossi, Head of Studio, Eidos-Montréal.
Straight Up Films will produce the feature adaptation with Roy Lee and Adrian Askarieh. The company’s President of Production, Sandra Condito, will serve as executive producer, along with Khalid Jones of Source Rock and Square Enix’s subsidiary, Eidos-Montréal. Feature film writing duo Adam Mason and Simon Boyes (Misconduct, Hangman, Not Safe for Work) will write the screenplay. Lee, who will produce under his Vertigo Entertainment shingle, was a producer on the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, and is currently developing sequels to 2014’s critically acclaimed box office hit The Lego Movie. Askarieh’s film credits include 2007’s Hitman™, starring Timothy Olyphant and Olga Kurylenko, and its sequel Hitman: Agent 47®. He will produce the movie under his Prime Universe production banner.
I am curious to see why they are going to be making a film based on Thief this late in the game. I know that there are many other franchises out there getting the same treatment right now but seeing as their isn’t even a new game title to go along with it or in the last two years it seems out of nowhere. Of course this could all be building up to a true sequel to Thief coming out and they want to use the synergy to help it along. Or maybe the super hero thing is finishing its course and we are going back into the video game film era here and Thief is just another addition.
What are your thoughts on Thief getting a film adaptation so late in the game? Do you think that the current team listed will be able to the franchise justice or will it fall flat like so many other video game films have? Who would you want to see as the lead in this film? Let us know and discuss away in the comments below. For more on all of this and other video games be sure to stay right here as we will keep pumping it all out as we get it.
