Assassin’s Creed Unity Is Playing With Time Travel

Assassin's Creed Unity

A new Assassin’s Creed Unity trailer has been released and it shows off what Ubisoft is calling ‘time anomalies.’

No, the above image isn’t some new skin for Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare or something alike. It is from the most recent Assassin’s Creed Unity trailer that you can see just a bit lower on the page. It looks like Ubisoft has decided to show off how their new ‘time anomaly’ system is going to shake up Assassin’s Creed Unity when we actually get our hands on it. The only thing is this new feature looks to add quite a bit of time travel into the mix…

Of course this has been no big deal in titles of the past. Time travel is a bit of what Assassin’s Creed has always been about. Only before Assassin’s Creed Unity we’ve always been stuck in one period in the past and one in the “present.” In the below trailer we see Arno hop from the French Revolution era to a more modern one as the ‘simulation’ begins to fracture for some reason in Assassin’s Creed Unity and the world around changes. Have a look for yourself if you don’t believe.

Assassin’s Creed Unity — Time Anomalies

Correct me if I am wrong but in all of the other Assassin’s Creed titles when the timeline or ‘simulation’ breaks we were kicked out of the Animus. Why now in Assassin’s Creed Unity does that force us to move into another period of time? Outside of adding in a new gameplay feature or mechanic of sorts why is Assassin’s Creed Unity deviating from the already set mythology of the franchise? That is if the time anomalies are even a feature we can manipulate instead of just being along for the ride.

According to Ubisoft though it sounds like there are more plans to use this throughout Assassin’s Creed Unity though so maybe we will be jumping the timeline more and more. On their own blog they said this is just a taste and they didn’t want to spoil more of Assassin’s Creed Unity so I think it can be a safe bet that we will see more and more of Paris in the game than we thought before. Maybe we can even go backwards more than the revolution…
