Sony will stop making physical PlayStation games in 2028, and claiming it is all because of how we play PlayStation games
If the news about Sony removing movies that you might have purchased on the PlayStation did not already rub you the wrong way, get ready for that to flow over into your video games in the future. In a decision where the writing was already on the wall, it looks like they will be halting all physical disc production of games when January 2028 rolls around. From the sounds of it, it will be all PlayStation games and not those that are first-party titles on the consoles moving forward. All for the reason that the consumer just does not want to have physical media anymore. Yes, it is all our fault that we will no longer be able to actually own any of our video games out there. Get ready for the new wave of never actually getting to own a single thing you pay for out there, while the corporations say this is what we all want.
While not stated directly in that way, the Senior Director over at Sony laid it out there that this is the “consumer preference” for PlayStation games, and they are just making the move to take advantage of that trend. While I will admit there is a bit of a convenience to not having to place a physical disc into my console to start playing any game, I do remember living through the massive outage where I could not play any of my games because the PlayStation network was down. That was not a fun time, and that was only a few days. After they make this move in 2028, it could become a permanent thing with any game you purchase on the network or from a retailer. I know that the PC side of things has been fine with this, given how Steam and other online stores roll, but there have been their own issues on that side of things. If I cannot play my video games, I want it to be because the power is out or something to that level, and not just because some greedy corporation does not want to host the digital files anymore.
Physical Disc Production Ending In January 2028 For New Games Releasing On PlayStation Consoles
In response to shifting trends in consumer preference, new games will be released on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.
Sid Shuman — Senior Director, Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications
As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that have already been released or will be released prior to January 2028 in disc format.
This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.
We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or the PlayStation Store. We remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans, and we thank you for your continued support.
If none of that concerns you, then you are delusional and ready to give in to the corporate greed of the industry. You do you. Even if this should be concerning, as this does mean that PlayStation could remove any bit of content whenever they wish, leading to more lost media. If you need a great example of that, tell me where you can enjoy the horrors of P.T. without buying an expensive console that just happened to have the game on it still. Now, imagine instead of P.T., it is your God Of War or Call Of Duty. Hells, given that Call Of Duty is an IP that is owned by one of PlayStation’s competitors, let us envision a world where Sony wants to try and make their own version, so they remove all of your games that you purchased so you can only buy theirs. This is not a good move for the consumer, no matter the convenience of having your massive library at the touch of a button. It might just be time to truly vote with our currency, or know that you will never own a thing you pay for again.
Are you part of the problem that PlayStation is claiming caused this choice, or will you be part of the solution to make sure you can actually own your video games in the future? Will this also shift how retailers and third-party games are pushed to the console, and will we lose more of the collector’s editions as we have already? How long will it take for Sony to block all of the video games by their competition to favor their own titles, and will we lose access to older digital games to force us to buy the remakes and remasters in the future? Let us hear your thoughts on all of this in the comment section so we can discuss it all. We are fans of PlayStation around here, and this is a tough thing to hear. It does not feel like the best choice for the consumer, and we are going to stand by that. This is a move just for the corporation to save money while also placing us in a stranglehold, no matter how they want to spin it.
