A new way to experience your Steam library is out there, with the launch of the new Steam Machine
A new PC is hitting the market with the latest Steam Machine hitting the market out there. Well, more that Valve is giving us all the ability to reserve a new bit of hardware for us all to play our backlog of video games, that just also happens to be more of a PC than the past iterations of the hardware some of us still have. As long as you are ready to drop some funds on the new machine that might be closer to those of a lower-end gaming PC. We’re talking about $1050 for the basic version, and then things can go up from there. If your interests are now piqued for all of this, let’s get into what is actually coming and how you can make sure you have your chance to buy one before anyone else out there. Potentially…
Okay, so the price of the Steam Machine might not be the best for many out there, but that’s just part of the current times we live in. Specifically, the RAM and storage limitations that we’ve seen in the current market space. That’s to say, they wanted to stick close to what the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are going with, but even those consoles are going up in price, and a dedicated “PC console” was going to have to deal with the same issues. Maybe in the future, those prices might drop, since the biggest bundle is about $1430. Take that all into account for the Steam Machine, as those who truly want to give the hardware a go can do so now. Well, the more they can put into the interest to buy one, then a lottery system will sort them, and on June 29th, those who are lucky will be given a chance to buy one of the units out there. That sounds like a wild way to go about things, but this is the world that we’re choosing to live in due to the instant gratification aspect of humanity.

Steam Machine, like our other hardware products, is made up of many components that we source from manufacturers around the world. The price at which we sell our hardware is a direct result of the cost of these components. We felt like we had a good understanding of how those costs might change over time when we first started sourcing them for the Steam Machine back in 2023. That understanding was born from the many years of data we all have about the evolution of PC hardware prices – primarily, that it tends to get cheaper over time as new technology arrives.
Over the past year or so, that has changed quickly and significantly, most visibly for RAM and storage components. There are a variety of reasons, all of which are affecting hardware products everywhere. The overall effect is that our original goal for the price of the Steam Machine is no longer viable. So the prices we’re sharing today reflect the state of the world for manufacturing, or, more accurately, it reflects the price of the components as we’ve secured them over the past 6 months.
Price wasn’t the only thing impacted by all of this: availability was as well. There were periods where we found we couldn’t source some of our components at all, at any price. More than anything else, this has impacted the number of units we’ve been able to produce for launch.
In an effort to improve the purchase experience and limit resellers, we’re implementing a reservation system.
Starting right now, you can sign up for the Steam Machine model/bundle you’re interested in.
If you’re busy now, no problem: You can sign up anytime before Thursday June 25th at 10 a.m. Pacific.
At that time, we will close signups and do a one-time randomization to determine the reservation and waitlist order.
Based on the reservation order, you will receive an email on June 25th indicating one of two things:
- You’ve been added to the reservation queue, and a Steam Machine has been reserved in your name. As units become available for shipment, people in the reservation queue will receive an email with the option to purchase.
- We’ll send the first batch of those starting Monday, June 29th, and will continue to go through the reservation queue as units become available.
- You’ve been added to the waitlist, and we’ll let you know when more units become available.
Will you be looking into getting a dedicated system to play your Steam games at home? Will it take a long time for the price to drop to the point of a PS5 or Xbox? Could this lead to gamers just learning how to build their own gaming PCs to save some money and have more capabilities? How long down the line will people who can buy the hardware have to wait until they have the systems in their homes? Let’s hear all of those thoughts, complaints, and other things rolling around in your head down in the comment section. We’re curious about the Steam Machine around here, as that would solve a few issues that sharing gaming PCs with work PCs can have. As things progress or potentially change, we’ll share them all here. Please keep your eyes on the site and follow all of our socials to see when we have anything else to say about all of this.
