Raiden Is The Answer To “Who’s Next?” For Mortal Kombat X

Raiden Is The Answer To “Who’s Next?” For Mortal Kombat X

Mortal Kombat X

During EVO 2014 in Las Vegas, NV it was revealed that Raiden will be a fighter in Mortal Kombat X

Now we can take the fighter count to at least seven for Mortal Kombat X as Raiden has been confirmed to be coming back to the franchise. Not that big of a shocker (pun intended) as Raiden has been an iconic character much like Scorpion and Sub Zero have been over the last umpteen incarnations of the franchise lore. I could be wrong but I believe he has been in every version of the franchise in some form where as some have been left out for various reasons. I’m talking film and everything not just the games here.

None the less, Raiden is back for Mortal Kombat X and we also have a nice look at his three different fighting styles as he takes on Kotal Kahn, new character for Mortal Kombat X, and his Sun God form. At least it can be assumed the Sun God style given the nice sun like glow and references to the sun during the intro to the fight. That also include the little bit that shows off how each character’s bit of dialog will change given the opponents. Although I am still not sure how thunder blots out the sun. Anyone? Or are they going for The Worst Bit Of Dialog In A Game award with Mortal Kombat X? Hopefully that gets cleaned up in development.

For those wondering and those who have not jumped down the video here is a breakdown of those fighting styles Raiden will have in Mortal Kombat X.

  • Raiden — The thunder god
    • Thunder God — (Electrocution Kombos) This looks like an up-close and personal lightning-fast (pun intended) version of Raiden’s fighting style with a whole lot of lighting
    • Displacer — (Teleportation) Now Raiden can be just as annoying as Scorpion with the teleportation attacks that will be button mashed to no end. Although it looks like a fun and fast fighting style none the less
    • Storm Lord — (Lightning Traps) Here Raiden will employ ‘traps’ to harm the foes he is up against although it looks slow and pretty useless from what is shown

So two out of the three new fighting styles look like they will be a welcomed addition to Mortal Kombat X‘s Raiden. Like I noted above, the Storm Lord style looks down right useless unless you are fighting an un-skilled player of Mortal Kombat X. It feels almost like the designers needed a third style and someone yelled out “Lightning Traps!” and the team said “Fuck it; it’s all we got to go one for now.” It could be cooler than what was shown but you would think that at a fight game tournament you would show something that makes the crowd erupt in excitement. This didn’t look like much to me.

So that is seven down out of the rumored 40 characters for Mortal Kombat X. Hopefully we will be seeing another new character at SDCC here next week so we can keep the excitement flowing. I just hope that this “thunder” doesn’t blot out the steam roller of anticipation for Mortal Kombat X. (Pun not intended)
