The Walking Dead: A New Frontier

We sit down and review The Walking Dead: A New Frontier — From The Gallows. This is the final episode of Telltale’s continuation on their version of The Walking Dead. Here’s our review on how they did

It may have had a slow start to get going, but here we go with the end of The Walking Dead: A New Frontier‘s season here. Technically this would be the end of the third season of the franchise from Telltale Games but given the new title it can be seen as its own thing in a shared universe. No matter which way you want to take it, here we are at the end of this season of The Walking Dead and in turn the conclusion of this story and hopefully closure on all of the other events and choices in the game so far. Not to mention the answer to where the fourth episode left off with a cliffhanger. That was a rough one but here we go with our review of this final episode.

Story

All hell has broken loose in Richmond based on what Javier and crew have brought as well as all of the other machinations of the other characters in the area. No one is in a good place at all at this point but that doesn’t stop our “heroes” from trying to do what they see is the right thing. Now they are at a point where they can all cut and run or possibly go back and save the day. Not to mention the fact that Javi’s family is also pretty much shattered to. Now is the time to try and bring it all back together and hopefully press right on.

Hated

Given the end of the last episode and how this one had to pick up from, I was expecting there to be fewer things that I hated for The Walking Dead: A New Frontier here. Mostly this is the case. Sadly though, Telltale looks to have taken a page from the TV show and the fake-outs to try and build tension but truly feel unneeded and flat. I’m not even talking about the cliffhanger part, but there are a few times that you think that the story is going to go down the dark path it should be only to be a fake out of sorts and back to a happier ending. This could be based on my choices in the season so far, but it feels strange for this to even work out for the most part outside of one minor bit. Even if this was all based on my selections, it feels odd to have the “happy ending” as I did. It just didn’t fit in my opinion.

Loved

While things in the story seemed to go to a happier end for The Walking Dead, in my opinion, I am intrigued to see that there were so many things that could have been changed based on how we played the game similar to how the second season ended. One specifically tied to Clementine that could have gone south or the way it did for me real quick. Even parts that felt like they were on rails had an effect on all of this and it really drives home the want to replay it all again to see how you can change things. Even if some of the options look to be really forced, but at least there is that illusion again. Some people really like this and we’ll see just how all of the different endings or options can play out.

Another thing that I found rather entertaining is that The Walking Dead: A New Frontier looks to be one of the titles that has split the fans almost equally on what to do in the game. At least this is based on all of the stats and “character endings” that are traditionally shown at the end. Almost everything was close to evenly split as all the options here and in the rest of the game felt like they had true purpose and not just there to be a dick or softhearted. It could the franchise or Telltale is further perfecting their craft, but this is something that was a powerful aspect of each of the episodes. All of which leading to where we go with Clem and most likely the fourth season of the game.

Overall

Now that the season is over for The Walking Dead: A New Frontier and all is said and done, I’d have to say that it is completely worth the price and time of admission here. It did feel like it had a slow start up and some of it on rails, but once the meat and potatoes of it all come in, it is an amazing addition to the Telltale Games‘ library. This is not a filler season at all to get things back on track as I was originally afraid it would be. It even ends with something everyone out there has been hoping for and I know it is going to build up more for The Walking Dead franchise here soon. You should totally pick it all up now.

I give The Walking Dead: A New Frontier — From The Gallows One Downed Helicopter on the Downed Helicopter scale.
