Rumor Mill: Is There A New Mortal Kombat On The Way?

Mortal Kombat

The mind behind Mortal Kombat may be teasing a June 2nd event that could be another title to the franchise.

There are stretch rumors and then there are really stretch rumors like this one for a new Mortal Kombat to be announced just before E3. Some eagle eyed internet users who have been paying close attention to Ed Boon’s Twitter account have been piecing together the ramblings and musings of the co-creator of Mortal Kombat or stumbled upon an odd countdown to something. Here are the following tweets that have come out since May 4th.

2:33 PM – 4 May 2014

Square root of 841.

9:50 AM – 5 May 2014

Question: How many days in (non-leap-year) February?

12:08 PM – 6 May 2014

Man, I love the Simpsons.

If you go through this list you will find that the answers or items point to 29…28…27… It looks like a countdown of some sort that Mr. Boon is also being very coy about. Coy in the manner of kind of bringing some kind of validation to these claims. But could this mean that there is a new Mortal Kombat on the way to be announced here in the coming weeks or could this be a build up to another title or franchise that NetherRealm and Warner Bros. has on the burners? Could this also be the ramblings of a bored developer have fun at our heartstrings? Both could be true.

What gives the Mortal Kombat claim a bit more in the way of plausibility has to come from a few slip ups from people who have possibly worked on a new entry to the series. Kiefer Sutherland’s comments to IGN about that lend a bit to validating things but this could also be not for a standalone Mortal Kombat title. It could be a new Injustice title. It could be a new MK Vs. DC title. It could be another Mortal Kombat Mythologies title. Hells, it could be a whole new IP that was confused to be a new Mortal Kombat title due to the studio and those involved.

In the end though, we really will not know until the rumored date of June 2nd comes and goes. Anything is possible and in a market that tried to keep all of us glue to our screens, this would be a new one. I personally would find it funny to find out that he is just counting down the days to early retirement and we are just readying too much in. Or a new Mortal Kombat title…
